Sustainability
As a business that has been around since 2008, we know how important it is to look to the future.
‘Doing the right thing’ is one of our core values, so it is no surprise that we take sustainability very seriously; this is reflected in all that we do – meal recipes, packaging, delivery vans, premises and buildings as we as our supply chains.
Like most companies, we have come a long way, and as times and demands continue to change we aim to further improve and grow whilst establishing and incorporating necessary adjustments to ensure and support a greener and healthy future for all.
We will continue to share our sustainability journey along the way and, as always, would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on how we can do more.
We are committed to deliver long-term sustainability for our colleagues, customers, and the wider communities.
Leftovers and Waste
Donations
We regularly donate any unwanted food to local charities to help our local community.
Food Waste
By utilising anaerobic digestion, our food waste will be turned into green energy and a natural fertiliser. There is no greener way to recycle food!
Landfill – No, thank you!
It is very important to us to be able to recycle close to all our produced waste, the small amount of waste left is collected by Energy-from-Waste (residual waste only) – generating energy in the form of electricity and/or heat from the primary treatment of waste, or the processing of waste into a fuel source.
Our waste management enables us to ensure that none of our produced waste ends in landfills making us as a business an advocate of Zero-Waste-to-Landfill whilst maintaining an excellent recycling ratio.
Delivery Vehicles
We have been making tremendous changes to our fleet of delivery vans since 2023 by introducing electric vehicles – making our delivery journeys greener by reducing our CO2 emissions and footprint. We aim to be fully electric by 2026.
Our electric vans have officially covered 100,402 miles! That’s the equivalent of circling the entire planet four times, and then some more! At Crumbs Food Co, our vans have been hard at work delivering sustainably, one mile at a time. Here’s to more clean miles and fewer emissions ahead!
Solar Power
In 2023, we took a big step towards a greener future by installing 40 solar PV panels at our premises. Since then, they’ve been quietly turning sunshine into clean, renewable energy — helping us reduce our reliance on grid electricity and lower our overall carbon footprint.
Last year alone, our system generated 18.5 MWh of renewable energy. That’s enough to power around 7 average UK homes for a year — all created right from our rooftop.
By producing our own green energy, we prevent approximately 3,700kg of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere each year. That’s the equivalent of planting around 225 trees annually. Small panels, big impact.
Our solar power also helps fuel the future of our deliveries. The energy generated on-site supports the charging of our fleet of electric vans, meaning some of our deliveries are powered directly by sunshine.
For us, sustainability isn’t a tick-box exercise — it’s about making practical, measurable changes that add up over time. From reducing emissions to embracing renewable energy, we’re committed to doing our part to create a cleaner, more sustainable food industry.
Packaging
At Crumbs Food Co, all our meals for schools and nurseries are packed and delivered using reusable, steel containers, which are collected again from each setting after mealtimes. No waste is produced through packaging, of which we are immensely proud.
All our meals prepared for our corporate customers are packed and delivered in eco-friendly, recyclable vegware made of renewable plant-based materials, designed for industrial composting.
On rare occasions, we may also use FSC certified cardboard packaging to ensure we look after and protect our planet.
